The area where the cemetery and the tomb are located, popularly known as the Şeyh Ali Lodge, is located in the center of Hasankeyf, east of the Tigris River.

It is thought that the person lying in the tomb was a Sufi master, dervish or sheikh, that the tomb was built upon his death, additional structures were built later to meet the needs of the visitors, and the surroundings of the tomb turned into a cemetery with the expression of respect and reverence. All of the buildings in the area have reached the present day in a collapsed condition, and the foot and head witnesses of most of the graves are broken and unreadable. The cemetery was used until recently.
