In Hasankeyf, which has an important place in the history of culture, there are cave-type dwellings shaped by man, whose number is estimated to be around 4500. The residences have been used since prehistoric times and are used in Hasankeyf. For this reason, the city was called "Hısnı Keyfa", which means "City of Caves" or "City of Rocks" in Arabic and Syriac, because of its thousands of cave-shaped dwellings carved into the rocks.

The residences are concentrated in the deep and narrow canyons on both sides of the monolithic rock mass with an average height of 135 m, where the Upper City is located from the edge of the Tigris River, and on the cliffs of the Lower City rising to the south.
